Shock in Berlin-Mitte: tram accident injures passengers!

On August 12, 2025, a collision occurred between two trams in Berlin-Mitte. The collision took place on Mollstrasse, at the corner of Otto-Braun-Strasse, and resulted in injuries to two people. An injured woman was immediately taken to hospital, while the fire department responded with 44 emergency services to secure the scene of the accident. Fortunately, the trams had already been cleared when the fire brigade arrived, which made the emergency response easier. After the rescue work was completed, the intersection was quickly reopened to traffic.

The exact circumstances that led to this accident are currently unclear and are being both analyzed and investigated by the police. While Otto-Braun-Straße was reopened around 6 p.m., Mollstraße initially remained closed to traffic in both directions. According to reports from Daily Mirror The fire department handed over the operation to the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) at around 5:30 p.m.

Frequency of tram accidents

The incident joins worrying statistics: a significant increase in tram accidents in Berlin was already observed in 2023. Between 2018 and 2022, the number of accidents published by the police reached a peak of 411 in 2022. In the first half of 2023, 212 accidents had already been registered, with drivers being the main cause in around 70% of cases. Truck drivers make up almost 10%, pedestrians 8.5% and cyclists 6%. RBB24 reports that despite the high number of accidents, tram accidents only account for 0.23% of the total number of accidents in the city.

In total, there were 150 injuries in tram accidents in 2022, and by the end of June 2023 there were 79 injuries, despite one recorded death. The increase in accidents makes it clear that both the safety of passengers and road users is continually being put to the test. With the current accident on August 12th, safety in Berlin's road traffic is being discussed again.

The transport companies and the police will examine further measures to improve traffic safety, particularly in the area of trams. It is essential to identify the causes of such accidents and, if necessary, take preventative steps to avoid similar incidents in the future.
