Raid after violent Nakba demo: police proceed against suspects!

Kreuzberg, Berlin, Deutschland - On May 15, 2025, searches took place in Berlin as part of an extensive criminal police measure. The Attorney General in Berlin had ordered these measures after there was a * propalestinian demonstration * under the title "Nakba 77", which took place in Kreuzberg. This demonstration, which took place on the Nakba Memorial Day, recalled the flight and displacement of the Palestinians in 1948.

The investigation is directed against two people: a 28-year-old man who is particularly difficult for the * country peace break, resistance to enforcement officers and tried exemption from prisoner *, as well as a 29-year-old woman who is also accused of resistance to enforcement officers and the attempted prison exemption. However, both accused are not suspected of having carried out an immediate physical attack on the injured police officer.

consequences of the demonstration

around 1,100 people took part in the demonstration itself, many of which were aggressive against Israel and the war in Gaza. In the tumultuous scenes, more than a dozen involved were injured, including both demonstrators and police officers. A total of 56 people were temporarily arrested. Berlin's Government Mayor Kai Wegner and Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt sharply condemned the outbreaks of violence and emphasized the need to respect peaceful forms of protest.

The searches included five accusers of the accused and witnesses in which over 60 emergency services from the Berlin police were involved. While one of the accused was found, no arrests could be recorded in connection with the searches. During the investigation, several communication devices and other evidence were ensured for the presence of the accused at the crime scene.

international dimension and human rights

The events in Berlin throw a shadow on the global situation with regard to peaceful protests. In many countries in the Middle East and North Africa, as documented in a report by Amnesty International, peaceful demonstrators often learn brutal violence from state security forces. For example in Iraq and Iran, where numerous people were killed in protests, as well as in Egypt, where there were mass arbitrary detention. This trend limits the space for expression and peaceful protest.

The parallels to the current events in Berlin cannot be overlooked, since here, too, the violent clashes during a demonstration, which is considered peacefully, illustrate how quickly a peaceful meeting can turn into violent arguments. The constant conflicts, especially in the context of Israel and Palestine, also increase the tensions worldwide and influence how demonstrations are perceived and treated.
