Protests in Berlin: 500 demonstrators gathered despite police blockade!
On October 7, 2025, on the anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel, numerous demonstrations took place in Berlin and other German cities. The central event in Berlin began with a commemoration at the Red Town Hall, which was banned by the police. Despite the ban, around 500 people gathered that day, shouting slogans such as “Glory to our Fighters” and “From the River to the Sea”. There were clashes between the demonstrators and the police, in which at least one officer was injured. The police prepared a water cannon, but did not initially use it.
The originally planned demonstration was to take place under the title "Stop the genocide" and attract 150 participants. However, a call about social media led to considerable mobilization that led to the initiation of criminal proceedings. The same morning, the police stopped another anti-Israeli demonstration near the Oberbaumbrücke, in which around 40 people blocked the road and lit pyrotechnics. Although there were no injuries or damage, 17 people were arrested because they called forbidden slogans or disturbed road traffic.
Increased tensions in Berlin
The mood in Berlin was heated by the pro-Palestinian protests. Events took place in several German cities immediately before the anniversary of the attack, including in Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Munich. The police therefore had around 2,000 forces in Berlin for the commemoration day. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced a hard approach to anti -Semitism, which reflects the tense discussions in society. In Berlin-Kreuzberg, around 3,500 people gathered to protest under the motto "Demo against Genocide in Gaza", where stone and bottle throws were later committed to police forces.
In Munich, over 8,000 people took part in the commemoration event “365 Days – Munich against Anti-Semitism”, including the Israeli ambassador Ron Prosor. A counter-demonstration under the slogan “365 days of genocide” attracted around 1,200 participants. These events show the different perspectives and emotions that were expressed in Germany on this important anniversary.
Police measures and social division
The police intervened several times in the pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Berlin. There were several arrests in the atmosphere of the tense mood and the feared riots. In Berlin, the event is criticized as a new "low point of humanity", in particular by the Central Council of Jews in Germany, which indicates the growing anti -Semitic statements in society. Regardless of the police units that should ensure security, the question remains how to deal with the continued conflict in a peaceful way.
On October 7, 2023, the anniversary of the Hamas attack, there were, according to various reports, a high number of casualties in Israel, triggering the subsequent Gaza war. According to Palestinian authorities, over 65,000 people have been killed in the current conflict, including many civilians. These tragic events form the background for the tense social and political situation in Germany and Europe, which became clearly visible in the recent demonstrations.
