Potsdam is happy: Babelsberg lido open on July 5th!
The Babelsberg lido in Potsdam will be reopened on July 5, 2025 after almost two years of extensive renovation work. Mayor Burkhard Exner presented the key to the redesigned bath on Saturday morning. The reopening is celebrated with an open day, where admission is free for all visitors. With this opening, two beach baths are available to the bathers in Potsdam: the Park Babelsberg and another on Lake Templin. The Park Babelsberg is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
The renovation of the lido was a complex task that was due to the special location of the site. An exchange of space with the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Berlin-Brandenburg Foundation was an essential prerequisite for realizing the renovation. By agreement between the Ministry of Culture, the Foundation and the city, this property exchange could now be carried out successfully.
Details of the redesign
The modernization of the lido includes numerous improvements that meet the needs of all ages. In addition to a modern, barrier -free access, a multifunctional building was built, which offers new club rooms and a boat hall for both the Potsdam bathing landscape and the Potsdam Seesportclub. The foundation stone for this building took place in September 2023.
The new building not only offers barrier -free access, but also sustainable technology and family -friendly sanitary facilities. Other important features are a blind control system, disabled -friendly changing rooms and fortified paths for walkers and strollers. The integration measures are supplemented by the provision of e-charging stations and an orientation plan for visitors.
The opening of the city pool was originally planned for 2022, but there were several shifts due to property issues, monument protection requirements and delivery bottlenecks. The construction costs rose from initially 4 million euros to around 9 million euros, supported by federal subsidies of 1.6 million euros. This development has ensured criticism of project management and cost increases in public. Despite all the challenges and delays, the reopening is not only seen as an important event for the bathers, but also coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Potsdam GmbH bathing landscape. With the opening of the city pool, Potsdam will have a total of four modern outdoor pools and thus enrich the pool landscape.The Babelsberg lido Park not only represents a place of relaxation, but also symbolizes the successful cooperation between the city, cultural institutions and supporters.
