Refurbishment of the school sports facilities in Pankow: A profit for the students!

On September 19, 2025, the sporting infrastructure at the Robert Havemann Gymnasium in Achillesstraße was extensively renovated. The school sports facility, which suffered from poor condition for many years, has now learned an urgently needed modernization. Jörn Pasternack, district councilor for school, sports and facility management, and representatives of SV Karow 96 e. V. were on site to examine the new circumstances.

The renovation is particularly important because the school campus is one of the largest locations in Pankow with coherent open spaces. In recent years, the sports open spaces have been heavily drained due to financial bottlenecks and vandalism. In August 2022, a decision template for complete renovation was signed. The original budget for the work was 1.3 million euros, but additional measures were required.

Extensive renovations

The renovations carried out include:

  • Eine 100-Meter-Laufbahn, die abiturrelevant ist
  • Weit- und Dreisprunganlagen
  • Ballspielflächen
  • Einen Kunstrasenplatz

In addition, a new beach volleyball system and a cleaning ramp were built. A garden house that is supposed to serve heavy sports equipment in the power sprint area is currently being built. This garden house will make it easier for teachers to handle the devices over the sports facility.

The importance of such sports rooms is also recognized at the political level. In recent years, initiatives to combat the renovation traffic jam at sports facilities in Germany have been created. This shows that politics wants to support the importance of sports offers for the community and youth. Funding for popular, leisure and school sports are provided at EU, federal, state and local levels, which makes it easier to find municipalities and associations to find suitable programs and to demonstrate eligibility. A comprehensive network of experts supports these projects with expertise in financing, renovation and new construction of sports facilities sports facilities concepts provides detailed information about the possibilities.
