Pankow and its history
The Pankow district is the second largest and most populous district in Berlin. The merger with the former districts of Prenzlauer Berg and Weißensee took place as part of the administrative reform in 2001. Pankow, named after the Panke River, extends in the northeast of Berlin and borders Mitte and Reinickendorf in the west, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg in the south and Lichtenberg in the east. Between 1945 and 1960, Schönhausen Palace in Pankow was the residence of many members of the GDR government and the district was often used by Western authors as a metonym for the GDR regime. This gives Pankow a special historical depth and cultural identity.
There are numerous attractions in Pankow, such as the Rykestrasse Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Germany, and the Weißensee Jewish Cemetery, which is one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Europe. In addition, the residential town of Carl Legien in Prenzlauer Berg is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Berlin Modernism. With the Weißer See, Pankow also has the largest natural body of water in the district.
Politics and infrastructure
Pankow, with a vibrant political landscape, has a district assembly that is responsible for legislation and electing the city government. The last election took place on September 26, 2021. The results reflect a colorful political diversity:

Sören Benn from the Left was elected mayor on October 27, 2016, and the current district government has outlined potential challenges and opportunities in the areas of urban development and citizen services.
The accessibility of the district is also remarkable. Pankow is served by several S-Bahn lines, including S1, S2, S25, S26 and S41 and S42. There are also five U2 subway stations in the south of the district. These infrastructural conditions make Pankow an attractive place to live and work.
