New sports center in Prenzlauer Berg: laying foundation stone for modernization!

The Pankow district office has invited to the foundation stone of the new functional building on the “Ella-Kay-Straße” sports facility. The event will take place on Thursday, September 16, 2025, from 3:30 p.m. to around 4:30 p.m. at the Ella-Kay-Straße 2 location in 10405 Berlin. The planning for the two-storey, barrier-free building aims to provide modern changing rooms and sanitary rooms and create additional areas for the primary school at the planetarium and for associations.

With the new building, the district office is reacting to the increasing need for school and non -classes of sports. According to [berlin.de] (https://www.berlin.de/ba-pankow/aktuelles/pressemayeilungen/2025/Pressemage department. 1597361.php), the existing facilities from the 1950s are no longer up to date. These do not meet the modern requirements for energy efficiency and accessibility, while the current state excludes economic renovation.

Construction and financing

The start of construction is scheduled for early 2025, while the completion of the new building in mid -2027 is sought. The total costs amount to around 5 million euros. Funding is used for funds from the federal program "Refurbishment of municipal institutions in the areas of sports, youth and culture" (SJK 2022) as well as compensation amounts as part of the sustainable renewal in Prenzlauer Berg, in addition to funds from the sports facility renovation program of the State of Berlin.

The sports facility is intensively used by the primary school at the planetarium and the SG Rotation Prenzlauer Berg. In 2016, the natural grass was replaced by modern hockey turf, which has significantly improved the use of the system, as also describes mein.berlin.de.

Improvement of the sports infrastructure

With the new building, the district follows a long -term plan to strengthen the sports infrastructure in Berlin. In total, the city provides around 4,450 public sports facilities at over 1,200 locations, including sports fields, sports halls and other facilities that serve the basic care of the Berlin athletes, as the page [berlin.de/sen-senorr ,https://www.berlin.de/sen/inertes/sportmetropole-berlin/sportinfrastructure/) reports.

The planned development of an adjacent parking lot will result in the elimination of around 20 parking spaces, but the new functional building should act as a central meeting point for neighborhood communities, school classes and clubs. This measure strengthens the social infrastructure in Prenzlauer Berg and contributes significantly to the promotion of sport in the region.
