New town hall of the future: Visionary designs for Berlin-Mitte!
A new town hall will be built in the Mitte district of Berlin, which is planned as part of the future “House of Statistics” district. The architectural competition for the construction project was decided in April 2025, and the selected designs can now be viewed in an exhibition in the New Townhouse at Parochialstrasse 3. This exhibition is open until July 25th, as reported by berlin.de.
The new town hall will have a usable area of around 19,500 square meters and is intended to be an open, accessible building with multifunctional usage options. The jury meeting that selected the best designs took place on April 9th and 10th. A total of 20 designs were submitted, three of which received prizes and two recognitions.
Prize winner and architectural concept
The Dresden architectural firm Atelier Schmelzer Weber Architekten won first prize in this competition. Their design impressed with its urban integration, publicly accessible use and striking facade design. The jury praised the high quality of all submitted designs and unanimously recommended the realization of the award-winning project.
The new town hall will be a central element of the Alexanderplatz district and, in addition to a parliament hall, which forms the heart of the town hall, will also contain a foyer with citizens' offices, an event area, a canteen, and even a 24/7 library. The registry office will be located on the top floor and will offer visitors a spectacular view, according to entwicklungsstadt.de.
Sustainability and investments
The investment costs for the entire district are estimated at around 250 to 350 million euros. A total of 66,000 square meters of new building space will be developed, significantly expanding the existing 46,000 square meters. A 15- and a 12-story residential building as well as an office tower over 60 meters high are also planned. The planned completion date of the new building is set for 2029.
The Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing is responsible for implementing the new building. In a technical discussion on building culture, experts explained that competitions like this create an important basis for planning and help to find high-quality and innovative solutions. The process for this competition was designed as an open, two-phase format, which ensures that the best solutions are identified, as berlin.de explains.
