New queer housing project in Berlin-Mitte: A home for women!
A groundbreaking project in Berlin-Mitte is nearing completion: The queer women's housing project at Berolinastrasse 9-11, which offers 72 apartments for lesbian and queer women, is expected to be ready for occupancy in January 2026. The planned net rents are around 7 euros per square meter, making the project an attractive option in the already expensive Berlin housing market. The initiative not only creates safe housing, but also a place of community and support for the LGBTIQ+ community.
The construction partners, Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Berlin-Mitte mbH (WBM) and Rad und Tat Berlin gGmbH, have implemented a climate- and community-oriented living concept. The first floor contains important community facilities such as an event hall, a neighborhood café and consultation rooms. In addition, a nursing home community is planned for older lesbian women or those in need of care, which offers space for eight residents. The barrier-free apartments meet the needs of the residents and are part of the goal of promoting an inclusive neighborhood.
Diversity and inclusion in focus
The queer housing project on Berolinastrasse is not only a living space, but also a socio-cultural center with a variety of offers for the community. It houses neighborhood restaurants as well as advice and information services. The development of the project was initiated by women who actively brought their needs and wishes into the planning process. This aims to create a community of solidarity and lively coexistence.
The project is strategically located near Alexanderplatz and the U5 station Schillingstrasse. The developments in this area are in line with the initiative “Berlin stands for self-determination and acceptance of gender and sexual diversity”. This initiative is intended to help better understand the realities of homeless and homeless LGBTIQ+ people in Berlin. Mayor Cansel Kızıltepe has stressed that there is an urgent need to protect queer people from homelessness as they often face discrimination.
Needs-based offers
The Senate administration has therefore commissioned a basic study on housing and homelessness among LGBTIQ+ people, the results of which are expected from September 2023 to September 2024. The study aims to show how underserved population groups can be supported more specifically. The creation of projects like the one on Berolinastrasse could be an important step in promoting inclusive urban development and promoting the diversity of Berlin's population.
With a funding requirement of 130,000 euros, the approach is to anchor social and cultural needs in the city. The queer women's housing project in Berlin-Mitte is an example of the growing responsibility to integrate the strengthening and support of marginalized groups as part of social urban development. The project promises to be a safe and vibrant home for lesbian and queer women.
