New life in Berlin-Mitte: Play and sports areas opened!

On October 18, 2025, a modernized area for sports and games was opened on Rochstrasse in Berlin-Mitte. The Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Berlin-Mitte mbH (WBM) implemented this project as part of an urban development funding measure. The redesign aims to sustainably upgrade the living environment and create meeting spaces for children, young people and families. Before the opening, the area was closed for safety reasons.

The infrastructure of the new area includes a football field, various exercise and play opportunities as well as lounge areas. Furthermore, new green spaces were created, which contribute to the ecological improvement of the district. This project could not have been realized without the essential financial support from the Berlin Senate amounting to 157,000 euros and the WBM's own contribution of around 215,000 euros. The WBM also pointed out that this is the second of three planned construction projects to improve the quality of life in the residential areas.

Funding structure and goals

The redesign of this area shows how public funding programs combined with private investments can make urban space more attractive. According to information from the Federal Ministry of Urban Development, the federal government's urban development funding has been supporting sustainable urban development in Germany for over 50 years. In the federal budget for 2024, 790 million euros are available for urban development funding.

  • Stärkung von Innenstädten und Ortszentren.
  • Stabilisierung sozial benachteiligter Quartiere.
  • Herstellung nachhaltiger städtebaulicher Strukturen.
  • Unterstützung von Transformationsprozessen im Hinblick auf den Klimawandel.

The fundamental goals of urban development initiatives aim to remedy social injustices and increase the quality of life in urban areas. The Städtebaufoerderung has initiated several programs to achieve these goals, such as “Living Centers” and “Social Cohesion”, which provide millions of dollars in funds for various cities and municipalities.

Successful projects in the capital

The project on Rochstrasse follows the successful opening of a meeting place in the Werner Düttmann settlement in Kreuzberg. Such initiatives are crucial to promote quality of life in urban areas. The redesign of the play areas is not only a step towards creating play spaces, but also a contribution to strengthening the sense of neighborhood and social interaction among the residents.

The integration of new green spaces and modern sports facilities shows how important it is to take ecological aspects into account when making urban development changes. The WBM's collaboration with the Environment and Nature Conservation Office of the Mitte district is another example of the commitment that goes into the realization of such projects.
