New bike road opened on Hungary - now cycling!
On July 8, 2025, the district office Mitte announced that the construction work for the new bicycle road in Hungarystrasse has now been completed. This new street extends between Müllerstrasse and Indian Straße and is an essential part of the city's bicycle traffic network. The district councilor for order, environment, nature, streets and green spaces, Christopher Schriner, emphasized that the bicycle road offers an attractive bike route away from the heavily frequented traffic arteries. With the aim of improving security and visibility at the intersections, extensive measures were implemented, which also include additional parking options for bicycles.
The construction work began in November 2024 and were successfully completed in May 2025. The conversion costs amounted to around 120,000 euros, supplemented by an additional 60,000 euros for the renovation of the asphalt. The new bicycle road is now provided with clear signage and markings on the road, so that cyclists and pedestrians are clearly delimited from each other. However, fire brigade operations are allowed to drive the road, which is made possible by a row of bollards from Edinburger Straße.
Invitation to Any Colleus
To celebrate the completion of the bike road, the district office invites you to a resource event. This will take place on Monday, July 14, 2025, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Hungarystrasse on the corner of Indian Strasse. Interested parties are invited to explore the new route and to find out more about further plans in the area of the cycling infrastructure.
The regulations in the new bicycle road are clearly defined. Cycling operators are allowed to use the entire road width and drive side by side, while car traffic can only be driven there with legitimate concerns (including the additional sign "Residents free"). The legal driving requirement remains and the speed may be a maximum of 30 km/h. These measures correspond to the general requirements for bicycle roads in Germany, which are often associated with high density of cycling and subordinate importance for motorized traffic.
advantages and design of bicycle streets
bicycle roads offer many advantages for cyclists. They are specially designed to prioritize the bicycle traffic and enable safe and pleasant driving. According to the 2023 bicycle monitor, 83 % of cycling bicycle roads feel safe, and 48 % prefer them to other bike paths. Bicycle roads with a standard width of at least four meters ensure wider lanes, which also contributes to promoting cycling and ensuring security.
The amendment to the road traffic regulations in 2021 made it easier to create bicycle roads by setting the necessary conditions. Information and guidelines for designing bicycle streets are available on platforms such as the mobility forum, which offers numerous information on implementation in German cities. However, good examples go beyond the mere infrastructure; They also require comprehensive planning and the integration of local conditions.
The implementation of such projects is crucial for the traffic transition in Germany. Events such as the Anradeln in Hungarystrasse support the acceptance and awareness of the new traffic routes, while there are also numerous initiatives to promote bicycle streets. href = "https://www.mobilitaetsforum.bund.de/de/themen/radverkehr/bahrradstraßen/Bahrrassen_node.html"> Mobility Forum offer further information on the current developments in the field of cycling and the specific requirements for bicycle roads in Germany.
