Neo-Nazis in Berlin: Threat to CSD and new youth propaganda network!

In recent years, the right-wing extremist scene in Germany has changed rapidly. In Berlin in particular, extreme right-wing youth groups such as the Deutsche Jugend Voran (DJV) and Jung & Stark (JS) have been increasingly active since early summer 2024. These groups are not only evident in their militancy, but also through their increasing appearance at events such as the Christopher Street Days (CSD).

Current reports show that several hundred neo-Nazis took part in protests against the CSD in Berlin. These came from all parts of the Federal Republic. In 2023 in particular, the number of right-wing extremist anti-CSD marches doubled compared to the previous year: from 33 to 47. Of 237 nationwide CSD and Pride events, one in five was affected by right-wing extremist counter-meetings, which underlines the strategy of these groups.

Activity of neo-Nazi youth groups

The youth organizations do not limit themselves to protests. They have also discovered social media for their own purposes. They mobilize and network on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. There is a striking mixture of ethnic patriotism and open National Socialism in their content. This attitude of dominance has led to direct confrontation on the streets.

A worrying trend is the increased recruitment of children and young people into the right-wing extremist scene. According to a study by the Center for Monitoring, Analysis & Strategy (CeMAS), there has been a significant increase in children, adolescents and young adults who are considered suspects in the right-wing extremist spectrum. According to the federal government, the influx has apparently increased significantly since 2024.

Methods and strategies

The neo-Nazis' strategies are well thought out. During their protests, active members are increasingly taking on organizational tasks - they act as stewards or warmers. They used such structures in an attempt to disrupt the CSD 2024, when four dozen neo-Nazis ended up in a police cauldron at Potsdamer Platz.

Although the number of participants in right-wing actions fell overall in 2024, the scene remains active. Right-wing extremist mobilizations regularly take place in Berlin and the neighboring federal states. It is not uncommon for several hundred participants to be present at the protests against CSD parades.

Cities such as Bautzen, Magdeburg and Grevesmühlen recorded the highest number of participants in anti-CSD events, indicating that the influence of these groups should not be underestimated and that they represent a serious problem for society.

Reports indicate that violent attacks by right-wing extremists usually take place outside of CSD events. The neo-Nazi scene uses this tactic to create a mood and spread its ideology. Even though there has been a decrease in the average number of participants at these anti-CSD events, the threat from right-wing extremist youth groups in Germany remains serious.
