Tiergart tunnel will remain tight for trucks and buses by 2025!

The zoo tunnel in Berlin remains closed to trucks and buses up to at least 2025! This message causes excitement among the road users, which rely on the important connection between the main train station and the Kreuzberg Landwehr Canal. The reason for the blocking is serious problems with the ventilation system that were discovered during a routine check. Like rbb | 24 reported, several fans have shown excessive vibration values and material damage, which endangers operational safety.
The ventilation system, which has been in operation since the opening of the tunnel in 2006, has now reached a biblical age. In order to ensure safety in the event of a fire, trucks and buses that represent a higher fire load must be kept away from the tunnel. Usually around 50,000 vehicles pass the tunnel every day, including the M85 and M41 bus lines, which now have to be diverted.
technical problems and diversions
The transport companies have already taken measures to minimize the effects of the blocking. The bus line M41 temporarily ends at Potsdamer Platz, while the M85 also does not drive through the tunnel due to another construction site. So far, the transport administration has not set up any official diversion, however, it recommends that the common alternative routes via the street of June 17 and the big star, such as The Tagesspiegel reported.
The challenge is that the electronic signage in the tunnel is unable to display the ban on passage for trucks. Therefore, sheet metal signs have to be organized, which turns out to be a lengthy process. The transport administration is working hard to set up these signs to clarify the traffic situation.
The future of the zoo tunnel
The repair of the ventilation system is expected to cost one million euros and the financing has not yet been secured. Until then, it will be necessary to replace individual parts again and again to keep the system functional. Katrin Vietzke from the Senate Department for Mobility said that the entire ventilation system must be renewed in the medium term, which, however, depends on the availability of funds.
The situation is frustrating for the Berlin road users because they have to adjust to diversions indefinitely. The inconvenience is reinforced by the insufficient information situation and the missing signs. The hope remains that the tunnel can soon be released for normal traffic, but until then the drivers have to be patient.
