Panketal playground in new splendor: renovation will start soon!
On September 11, 2025, the Mitte district office announced the following measures to renovate the Panketal playground. The District Councilor for Order, Environment, Nature, Streets and Green Spaces, Christopher Schriner, provided information about the upcoming renovation work that will be initiated by the Roads and Green Spaces Office. These renovation measures are intended not only to repair the existing equipment, but also to add new, modern play equipment.
The new play equipment includes a hammock ensemble, a bird's nest swing and a revolving carousel. In addition, the table tennis tables and the climbing frame are being repaired. New benches will also be installed and the path areas will be resurfaced and partially redesigned. A particularly attractive feature will be the new staircase, which provides direct access to the Panke-Uferweg.
Important dates and alternative options
The renovation work will begin on September 22, 2025, after explosive ordnance examinations will initially be carried out from September 15, 2025. The expected reopening of the first construction phase is planned for spring 2026. The Panketal playground will be completely closed during the construction period. In the meantime, parents and children can use the playgrounds on Colony Street or on the corner of Soldiner Street and Panke. The district office asks for your understanding of the restrictions during the work.
The upcoming changes to the Panketal playground fall into a broader context in which municipalities across the country are examining renovation work and new construction of playgrounds. There is a particular focus on the inclusive design of playgrounds, which should enable all children, including children with disabilities, to play equally. The use of the free app “Playground Check” offers support by providing step-by-step instructions for assessing the inclusive design of playgrounds and making concrete suggestions for improvement. This app can be used on smartphones, tablets or PCs and was developed by KBV experts in the Agency Barrierefrei NRW project.
The importance of inclusive playgrounds
Creating equal outdoor play opportunities is a responsibility that German communities should take seriously. A study by Aktion Mensch shows that almost 80 percent of playgrounds in Germany are not suitable for children with disabilities. Research shows that children with disabilities can significantly improve their skills and social skills by playing with other typically developing children. Playgrounds should therefore offer a variety of barrier-free play equipment to meet different interests and needs.
KOMPAN GmbH, which has been on a mission to create inclusive, universal playgrounds since the 1980s, has gained extensive experience. With over 50 years of experience designing play solutions for everyone, including children with disabilities, KOMPAN relies on studies and observational analysis to encourage and develop play behavior.
The renovation and conversion of the Panketal playground is a step in the right direction to meet the needs of all children and improve play opportunities. The Mitte district office invites citizens to make use of the alternative options and to look forward to the new, attractive offers.
