Merkel's autograph marathon: Hundreds stand for a piece of history!
Berlin had a very special visit to the Wednesday evening: ex-chancellor Angela Merkel. In the Kulturkaufhaus Dussmann she presented her new book "Freedom. Memories 1954–2021" and attracted hundreds of fans who only wanted to secure an autograph from the once most powerful woman in Germany. The snake that meandered on the ground floor from the first floor and further on the street showed the great interest in Merkel's memoir. The event promised numerous signatures, but also a little patience, as many of the waiting people noticed. On the first day alone, the book is said to have been sold 35,000 times, which corresponds to sales of 1.47 million euros, as the B.Z. reported.
The stamina of the fans was put to the test, as the signing lesson only started at 4 p.m. and took several hours. "It was surreal to stand right next to her," said an enthusiastic waiting person who was signed three copies. While some viewed the signed book as a perfect Christmas present, many had already started reading the work and reported that large revelations in the 700-page forest were not to be expected. "I could unpack now," Merkel said during the book presentation, just to explain that she could pack the secrets again, as the Tagesspiegel reported.
The faces in the snake reflected admiration for the former Chancellor, but when the time became scarce, there were quiet disappointments. Some waiting people had to put up with the fact that the longed -for autograph could no longer be reached. Some, whose plans for a personal gift could burst, quickly searched for alternatives at the cash register. Despite the challenge of receiving all autographs in the remaining time, the rush that evening was unbroken and the memory of a historical moment was unforgettable for many fans.
