Literature and coffee house culture: Droste speaks in the Romanesque café!

Tauentzienstraße 9-12, 10789 Berlin, Deutschland - to restart the atmosphere of the coffee house literature is the goal of an upcoming event in Berlin. On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, a reading will take place at 7.30 p.m. with a conversation with the Budapest café house "Három Holló" in the exhibition room "The Romanesque Café" in Charlottenburg. Organized by the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office, the event will shed light on the unique relationship between the coffee house culture of the Danube monarchy and today's literary scene.

The German literary historian and writer Wilhelm Droste, who founded the café "Három Holló" in the V. Budapest district, will talk about the importance of this culture. The reading is part of the “The Romanesque Café” project and offers both a historical review and a view of the current relevance of this literary institution. Droste is also the founder of the literary magazine "Drei Raben", who publishes Hungarian literature in German.

a meeting point for artists

The Romanesque café on Budapester Straße was a central meeting point in Berlin over 100 years ago. The event will be moderated by Bernadette Conrad, who lived as a scholarship holder in Budapest and watched the cultural scene there intensively, as well as Michael Bienert, the curator of the exhibition "The Romanesque Café". During the evening, the two will talk to Droste about the development and challenges of coffee house culture.

The event is a highlight of the city partnership between Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and the V. district of Budapest. Due to the limited number of space, registration is required. The venue is at ground level and therefore also accessible to wheelchair users.

coffee house literature - a historical tradition

The coffee house literature has a long history that extends to Viennese modernity before the First World War. Coffee houses were places of exchange, discussion and creative inspiration. Authors who wrote their works in coffee houses are referred to as coffee house literates. These institutions not only enabled access to literature, but also for newspapers and information about current events. Numerous important writers and artists, including representatives of Hungarian literature, maintained this tradition.

The event in the Romanesque Café in Berlin ties in with this rich story and invites you to rediscover the cultural importance of the coffee house in the present. In addition, the poetic and literary connection between Budapest and Berlin is made tangible by Wilhelm Droste's stories. All interested parties are welcome to be carried away into the world of coffee house literature and to explore the multifaceted history of this special place.
