Königs Wusterhausen becomes green: 16 electric buses in use!

On Tuesday, July 9, 2025, the regional transport company Dahme-Spreewald (RVS) put 16 new electric buses into operation in Königs Wusterhausen. These buses are mainly used in the northern district. They were manufactured by the Chinese group B.Y.D., which is one of the largest manufacturers of electric vehicles. The total costs for the purchase of the buses and the necessary charging stations amount to around eleven million euros, with about half covered by federal funding. This measure is part of a more comprehensive strategy to make public transport more environmentally friendly, which is also supported by other initiatives in Germany.

According to RBB24, the fully charged battery of the new electric buses enables up to 450 kilometers, which corresponds to an operating time of a whole day. In addition, depending on the outside temperature, the buses can be recharged in about two hours. Each bus offers space for up to 71 passengers and is designed in such a way that it offers more space for wheelchairs or strollers than conventional diesel buses. This could be a valuable improvement for the users of public transport.

funding and support

Nationwide there are efforts to promote the traffic turnaround. The Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) has provided funding as part of the German structure and resilience plan. The aim is to have every second city bus driven electrically by 2030. To achieve this, a third round of the funding for buses with alternatives and the necessary infrastructure was started. Applications can be submitted by September 10, 2023, and a total funding volume of up to 1.75 billion euros is expected.

The funding not only includes the purchase of battery buses, but also of fuel cell and biomethan buses as well as the conversion of existing travel to alternative drives. A special focus is on CO2 avoidance and the electrification of the fleet of the transport companies. Over 250 transport companies are to be supported in this process, which also includes the installation of charging stations.

initiatives in Bavaria

in Bavaria is also actively working on the switch to electric buses. The Free State of Bavaria has provided funding of up to 95 million euros for 2023 to promote the acquisition of climate buses and improve the charging infrastructure. By 2028, a total of 2,000 climate music is to be brought to the streets. In the previous year, 200 climate buses have already been funded, including 120 electric buses.

The Buservice Watzinger GmbH & Co. KG received, for example, almost 600,000 euros for two electric buses and the associated charging infrastructure. Such funding measures are crucial to achieve the vision of climate -neutral mobility in Bavaria by 2040.

Overall, these developments show that considerable progress is sought at both regional and national level in order to make public transport in Germany more sustainable and to become independent of fossil fuels. The use of electric buses in Königs Wusterhausen is an important example of the implementation of this goal.
