Caribbean sounds at the barbecue for seniors in the Hans-Rosenthal-Haus!
On August 7, 2025 the event will take place Hans Rosenthal House A special barbecue festival under the motto “Caribbean Sounds” will take place in Berlin. The event is aimed particularly at seniors with disabilities and starts at 2:30 p.m., with doors opening at 2:00 p.m. The festival promises a varied selection of coffee, cakes, grilled dishes and cool drinks, as well as live music from the Caribbean and Latin America, which will invite guests to dance.
The Hans-Rosenthal-Haus is a barrier-free leisure facility that offers ideal conditions for the participation of this target group. Due to high demand, registration by telephone is required from July 1, 2025 on 030 90299-6546. The cost of the barbecue is €7.50 (reduced €4.00), which includes a grill plate, a salad, a drink and a small coffee setting. Depending on the weather, the event will take place when the weather is nice.
Preparations and challenge
In keeping with the tradition of the numerous barbecues that take place in various communities, preparations are in full swing. A similar event organized by a church community had to be canceled several times before it could finally take place. The sexton took care of preparing tables and benches, while the women's club prepared various salads. On the day of the festival, the sexton quickly fetched baguettes from the bakery after this had been forgotten during the preparations.
A challenge came in the form of a small accident: a girl tripped and dropped glasses, but was comforted by a saying, which recreated the joyful atmosphere of the festival. Despite these hurdles, the celebration was a success and the guests enjoyed the atmospheric gathering until late into the night.
Shared experiences and movement
The topic of grilling and the shared experiences associated with it not only promote sociability, but also exercise. In a movement story developed specifically for seniors that takes up these experiences, movements are read aloud and encourage participants to actively participate. It is emphasized that the exercises should be carried out carefully to avoid overexertion.
The exercise could motivate older people to take part in a barbecue. A good example of this is Traudl and Lisa, who are on their way to a city festival where a barbecue is also supposed to take place. Here you can expect various food stalls and a casual exchange with other guests, which promotes the feeling of community at the barbecue party.
It remains to be seen how many seniors will take the opportunity to dance and celebrate to the Caribbean sounds in the Hans Rosenthal House. The barbecue on August 7th could be another highlight in the event calendar for the target group and give the participants unforgettable moments.
