Fight for Silent Street 10: Seniors defend themselves against closure!
In Berlin-Pankow, the seniors at the “Stille Straße 10” meeting place are facing an uncertain future. 13 years ago, in the summer of 2012, they occupied the villa for 112 days to save their leisure club. The usage agreement with Volkssolidarität, which has stopped funding the facility until the end of 2023, is currently expiring. An extension of the contract is unlikely. Report this rbb24 and Daily Mirror.
With the discontinuation of support from Volkssolidarität, the seniors now have to compensate 15,000 euros in order to be able to continue operating the meeting place. The Stille Straße 10 support association plans to continue operations independently from January 2026, supported by committed citizens and artists. Ingrid Pilz, one of the former occupiers, emphasizes the association's determination to continue running the facility on its own.
Day of action for support
The support association invites you to a day of action next Saturday at 4 p.m. at Stille Straße 10. The aim is to mobilize support for the future of the meeting place. The approval of the district office and the district council is required to find a solution to the threatened closure. Social City Councilor Dominique Krössin (Left) is actively campaigning for a solution.
A concept for an open, intercultural meeting place for seniors already exists. This is intended to diversify the offerings and promote social participation, which is also becoming increasingly important in the context of demographic changes in German society. The Bertelsmann Foundation has therefore launched various initiatives that deal with future-oriented senior policy and sustainable concepts for the participation of senior citizens. The programs aim to develop innovative living arrangements and networks for older people to promote independence and social inclusion, such as Bertelsmann Foundation informed.
The situation of seniors in Pankow is an example of the challenges that many older people in urban centers face: a lack of financial resources and limited access to social services. This makes it all the more important that initiatives like the one at Stille Straße 10 continue to exist and find enough support to continue their important work.
