Hufelandstraße in Pankow: Bicycle street for more safety and comfort!
The transformation of Hufelandstraße in Prenzlauer Berg into a bicycle street has officially begun. According to the latest reports from Berlin newspaper The project aims to improve ride comfort for cyclists while preserving the traditional appearance of the road. A complex process of grinding the cobblestones is used to make the road surface more bicycle-friendly, as previously cyclists often had to use sidewalks due to the uneven pavement.
The measures that come under the umbrella of the program to promote sustainable mobility in Berlin not only promote cycling, but also reduce motorized traffic. City councilor Manuela Anders-Granitzki emphasizes that this redesign is intended to create clear conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.
Details about the redesign
The new cycle lane will be four meters wide and will be equipped with a safety divider to prevent accidents such as dooring accidents. The structural adjustments also include the reorganization of sidewalks and roadways, the lowering of curbs for barrier-free crossings and the creation of new seating and areas for urban green space.
The schedule for the construction work stipulates that the first section between Greifswalder Straße and Hufelandstraße 19 is expected to be completed by October 21st. The further section, which extends from Hufelandstraße 23 to Am Friedrichshain street, is scheduled to be processed from October 21st. The work will take place Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., during which time the respective road sections and adjacent intersections will be completely closed. The restrictions also apply to car-sharing charging stations, which cannot be used, while garbage collection, emergency services, delivery traffic and access to underground car parks remain possible.
Long-term goals and support
The project by Development city is supported, has the overarching goal of making it easier to switch to climate-friendly means of transport and increasing safety for cyclists. Completion of the work is scheduled for summer 2026 and it is envisaged that the lessons learned from this project will be transferred to other road sections.
Overall, the redesign of Hufelandstrasse is seen as a central measure to improve everyday mobility between Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg... A groundbreaking project with regard to the transport transition in Berlin.
