Harald-Juhnke-Platz: Honor for Berlin's most popular entertainer!
On Monday, September 29, 2025, Harald-Juhnke-Platz in Berlin will be ceremoniously opened at 1:15 p.m. This happens at the intersection of Kurfürstendamm, Grolmanstrasse and Uhlandstrasse in Charlottenburg, a location that is closely linked to the work of the great actor and entertainer Harald Juhnke. Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, and District Councilor Oliver Schruoffeneger will take part in the ceremony honoring the naming of the square, which came into effect on September 1, 2025.
The decision to name was approved by a majority of the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district council on March 20, 2025. This happened as part of a motion that was supported by the CDU, Greens, SPD and FDP factions. The official naming is an appropriate tribute to the life's work of Harald Juhnke (1929-2005), who shaped Berlin's cultural life for decades and was known nationwide.
A voice for Juhnke's legacy
In addition, the legally required survey of the other districts and publication in the official gazette were carried out. The deadline for objections has already expired. Juhnke, who will commemorate the 20th anniversary of his death on April 1, 2025, is joining the ranks of Germany's greatest entertainers, with a career that spanned around five decades. His acting talents in numerous films and plays are unforgettable.
Particularly noteworthy is the Ernst Lubitsch Prize, which Juhnke received in 1992 for his comedic performance in the film satire “Schtonk!” received. This is about fake Hitler diaries that were published in the magazine “Stern”. His portrayal of “Captain von Köpenick” in the Maxim Gorki Theater and in a film of the same name will also be remembered by many. In this role he combined his roots in a simple environment with his talent for transformation and his comedic skills.
Versatility and passion
Juhnke, who was born in Charlottenburg in 1929 and grew up in Wedding, was active in various entertainment shows and was valued for his versatility. Nevertheless, he did not allow himself to be discouraged by personal challenges, such as the themes of his roles in the television film “The Drinker”, in which he dealt with his alcohol excesses. This impressive work was based on a novel by Hans Fallada and reflects the reality of many people's lives.
The recognition that Juhnke receives posthumously by naming the square is not only an honor for his artistic achievements, but also an invitation to Berliners and all visitors to remember the life's work of a man who has touched people's hearts for decades. The square will therefore not only represent a piece of history, but also a place of remembrance of one of Germany's greatest entertainers.
