Large white elm in Treptower Park: National Heritage Tree Ceremony!

On September 25, 2025, a special ceremony will take place in Treptower Park: the Great White Elm will be ceremoniously named a national heritage tree. This was confirmed by the local press, which highlighted the importance of this event. The ceremony begins at 1:00 p.m. and takes place in the rose garden, just 150 meters to the right of the jetties, directly next to the impressive elm tree, which is around 250 years old and has a trunk circumference of 6.35 meters and a height of around 25 meters.

Citizens are cordially invited to take part in this special event. The program of the honor includes a welcome, greetings, a project presentation and a speech dealing with the elm. Of particular note is the information on the selection of National Heritage trees and the criteria by which these trees are selected.

Importance of the white elm

The white elm (Ulmus laevis) meets all the criteria to be included in the list of “national heritage trees”. These trees are characterized by their great age, their pronounced trunk size and their special value for nature, culture or landscape. The designation as a national heritage tree is an important initiative supported by the Board of Trustees of the German Dendrological Society and funded by the Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation.

The robustness of the white elm is particularly impressive, as it is relatively resistant to Dutch elm disease. In comparison, field elms, another species, are increasingly endangered. This award also underlines the commitment to urban greenery in the Treptow-Köpenick district, where the elm is one of many old trees that have survived despite Berlin's increasing urbanization.

Ecological significance of Treptow Park

Treptower Park, designed by Gustav Meyer in the 19th century, is one of the largest and most popular green spaces in Berlin. It not only offers lawns and historic avenues, but also walking paths with access to the Spree, which serves as a habitat for birds, bats and insects. This area contributes significantly to urban biodiversity and at the same time fulfills important ecological functions, such as improving air quality, temperature regulation and CO₂ storage.

The park is also a popular place for outdoor enthusiasts. In the area surrounding the elm there are large meadows, restaurants, cafés and even beer gardens, which add to the charm of this green retreat. The elm itself is considered one of the ten strongest and oldest trees in Berlin and is even one of the top five in the east of the city. Its location and remarkable history make it an impressive tree worth celebrating.

How reported

, the main focus is on valuing outstanding tree individuals and securing their living conditions. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the ecological and cultural value of these unique trees.

Considering all these aspects, the celebration of the designation of the white elm on September 25, 2025 will not only be a celebration, but also a call to appreciate our green residents in the city.
