Boundless stories: New exhibition on migration opens in Mitte!

On July 5, 2025, the exhibition “DISLOCATIONS-within reach” will open in the Kunst Raum Mitte. District Mayor of Mitte, Stefanie Remlinger, invites you to the opening ceremony, which begins at 6 p.m. The art space is located at Auguststrasse 21 in Berlin and has established itself as a central place for dealing with (post-)migrant topics. This special exhibition focuses on the perspectives of migration and its historical embeddedness in the social and geopolitical context.

The gallery, which was originally founded in the late GDR as the “White Elephant Gallery”, will in future tell stories of East and West as part of this exhibition. Works by Daniela Kneip Velescu, Songhak Ky and Mila Panić are used. These artists address the diverse migration experiences and create installations that subvert national and historical borders. The biographies found in the works are presented as a nested process, highlighting the complex nature of identity and motherland.

Insights into associations and exclusions

The exhibition also questions the invisible connections between different places and visible or invisible breaks in history. An archive presentation documents the gallery's invitations since the 1990s and shows the associated exclusions. The exhibition is curated by Agnieszka Roguski and Natalie Keppler, who also played an important role in the previous group exhibition “in sight”, which took place from April 13th to June 22nd, 2025.

This previous exhibition focused on queer and feminist perspectives in historiography and included the work of Philipp Gufler, Constantin Hartenstein and Naomi Rincón Gallardo. It also presented a dialogue with a research project by Danila Lipatov and a performance by Lola von der Gracht. Both curators focus on the term DISLOCATIONS as both a theme and a method to emphasize shifts in places and perspectives.

An extensive accompanying program

The duration of the exhibition “DISLOCATIONS-within reach” extends from July 6th to August 31st, 2025. A comprehensive accompanying program will be offered during this time. A highlight is the Talk & Tour on Songhak Ky on July 24th, which starts at 6 p.m. This will be followed on August 29th by a collective intervention led by Anguezomo Nzé Mboulou Mba Bikoro, curated by Annika Reketat. The opening times of the art space are from Tuesday to Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The postmigrant discourse is now becoming increasingly important in the social sciences and shows how important it is to understand migration not just as a chronological condition, but as a complex process that addresses social mobility and diversity. Critical and optimistic approaches that promote rethinking the migration discourse are central to the creation of this art and the associated research.
