Violence at the Pro Palestine Protest: Police picks up!
On the evening of June 21, 2025, a dangerous incident occurred in Berlin-Mitte, which is directly related to the political tensions about the Middle East conflict. Four women, including a 24 and a 29-year-old, sat outside of a snack on Wilhelmstrasse when an unknown person threw a paving stone out of a window of a residential building. This struck about one meter of her table on the sidewalk. In addition, a wet washcloth hit the group, so luckily nobody was injured. These women were former participants in a pro-Palestinian Demonstration, which previously took place nearby. The police state security of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office has started the investigation into suspicion of attempted dangerous bodily harm, as reported.
The evening was shaped by several meetings: in Berlin a total of nine events were displayed on different topics. The pro-Palestinian demonstration under the motto "United 4 Gaza!" attracted up to 15,000 participants, while around 170 people followed pro-Israeli opposites. However, the course of these rallies was not peaceful. Several banned slogans were called during the Pro-Palestinian elevator, and symbols relevant to criminal law were also shown. The police carried out arrest in various places to keep the situation under control.
clashes and investigations
At the final place of the meeting, there were tensions between the participants of the Pro-Palestinian elevator and former participants in a pro-Israeli rally. The police were forced to intervene in the de -escalation and use a targeted manner. Due to the serious location, more than 1,400 emergency services were mobilized in the urban area. In this context, a total of 36 crimes were registered, which led to 49 arrests, including the use of indicators of unconstitutional organizations and an impact attack on enforcement officers.
A particularly alarming incident occurred on the Nakba Memorial Day, on which a 36-year-old police officer was seriously injured during a Pro-Palestinian rally. This was rated as the "attack on organs of the constitutional state", and the Berlin General Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation. The official suffered a broken arm and injuries to the upper body and is in the hospital. At least eleven other police officers and an unknown number of demonstration participants were also injured. The incident has led to claims for a re-evaluation of Pro-Palestinian meetings, especially with regard to the increasing radicalization and willingness to violence, such as the Tagesspiegel reported.
legal framework conditions
Demonstratingis a fundamental civil right in Germany, which is anchored in Article 8 of the Basic Law. This stipulates that "all Germans have the right to gather peacefully and without weapons without registration or permission". However, freedom of registration can be restricted if the planning is required. The relevant regulations are stipulated in the Assembly Act, which aims to ensure that meetings are bound to the conditions "peaceful and without weapons", explains policeifuerdich.de.
The violence that was observed during the demonstrations not only raised questions about security and the course of such events, but also on discussions about the effects on public order and the need for new measures to ensure the security of everyone involved. Interior Senator Iris Spranger has already announced a tough procedure against the perpetrators and Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt emphasizes the need for better equipment from the police to prevent future violent incidents.
