Quintuplets born in Berlin: A miracle at the Charité!

At the end of September 2025, the Clinic for Obstetric Medicine at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin experienced an extraordinary event: quintuplets were born by cesarean section in the 28th week of pregnancy after a high-risk premature birth. The mother, two girls and three boys are doing well and are showing encouraging progress in their development. The birth, which is statistically a medical rarity and only occurs in one in 50 million pregnancies, presented the entire team with logistical challenges.

A 25-person interdisciplinary team was responsible for the birth of the quintuplets. This team was made up of experts in obstetric medicine, anesthesiology and neonatology, who realized the extraordinary birth through close cooperation and careful preparation. Prof. Wolfgang Henrich, director of the clinic, described the event as a logistically demanding undertaking.

Intensive care for newborns

After the quintuplets were born, the team from the Charité neonatal ward took over the initial care. The newborns require intensive monitoring initially as they have individual needs that include breathing, circulation and temperature. Clinic director Prof. Christoph Bührer emphasized that the conditions for successful breeding are particularly favorable thanks to the Charité's expertise. The newborns are currently being well cared for and have already more than doubled their birth weight.

The Charité Clinic for Obstetric Medicine is the largest obstetric facility in Germany. Over 5,000 children are born here every year. Her special expertise lies in the care of high-risk and multiple pregnancies, which makes the extraordinary birth of the quintuplets even more remarkable. The entire team receives gratitude and recognition from the parents for the comprehensive and sensitive care.

The family of the quintuplets is allowed to leave the clinic as soon as the children are strong enough. Such an event is not only a medical success, but also a reason for joy for the entire Charité community and beyond.
