Franziska Schmidt takes over management of the galleries in Tempelhof-Schöneberg!

From October 2025, Franziska Schmidt will take over the management of the municipal galleries in Tempelhof-Schöneberg. She succeeds Barbara Esch Marowski and is responsible, among other things, for the “Haus am Kleistpark” and the “Galerie im Tempelhof Museum” locations. Tobias Dollase, the district councilor for culture, has already emphasized that he is convinced of Schmidt's expertise and experience and expects new impulses for the galleries. The gallery environment will therefore be shaped by their extensive specialist knowledge.

Franziska Schmidt is an experienced art and photography historian. With over 25 years of experience in the art and exhibition scene, she brings extensive knowledge in the areas of classic modern and contemporary photography. Her previous positions include managing the Museum of Photography in Braunschweig and managing the photography department at the Berlin auction house Grisebach. In addition to her advisory work for Gabriele Stötzer's archive and René Bertholo's estate, she has also taught at universities.

Diverse experiences and exhibitions

Schmidt has already curated numerous exhibitions, including the exhibition “Poesie der Zeit” with works by photographer Michael Ruetz at the Berlin Academy of Arts in 2024. In 2025, she will also co-curate the exhibition “Flucht” for the Museum of European Cultures, which presents photographs by Frank Gaudlitz. Such engagements demonstrate her ability to address both historical and contemporary issues in photography and present them in appealing formats.

The spectrum of photography is now broader than ever; since its invention in 1839, it has reflected not only aesthetic, but also social and social aspects. The relationship between photography and painting and the challenges of digital technologies are topics that are becoming increasingly important. Artificial intelligence also places new demands on the photographic process and expands the possibilities of visual art. As Rosalind Krauss's discussion of “the photographic” makes clear, photography is a dynamic medium that is constantly in dialogue with other art forms.

Future perspectives

In her new role as head of the municipal galleries, Franziska Schmidt will ensure that diversity and the historical and aesthetic dimensions of photography continue to be promoted. The “Haus am Kleistpark” and the “Galerie im Tempelhof Museum” will be places where innovative approaches to photography and its role in modern society will be presented. The open views and perspectives that photographers offer will be an important part of their curatorial work.

With her in-depth training, which began with a Master of Arts in art history and German studies at the Martin Luther University Halle/Wittenberg, and her involvement in various projects and art institutions, Schmidt is well equipped to enrich the cultural heritage and artistic perspectives in Tempelhof-Schöneberg.
