Festive reopening: The new House of Youth in Wedding!

On October 10, 2025, the Haus der Jugend in Berlin's Wedding district opened its doors after extensive renovation. In a press release from the Mitte district office, State Secretary for Housing and Tenant Protection, Stephan Machulik, emphasizes the importance of this central location for families, children and young people. The traditional building complex on Nauener Platz, which has been serving the young generation since 1953, now presents itself in new splendor.

The Haus der Jugend is part of one of the largest child and youth welfare ensembles in the Mitte district and combines a variety of educational, cultural and social offerings. There are numerous leisure opportunities, advice and spaces for creative activities available to anyone who is involved in this area or is looking for support. The new offerings include a family center, a neighborhood coffee shop, as well as facilities for counseling district mothers, parenting and family counseling, and a children's and youth office.

Extensive renovation and investments

The renovation of the House of Youth amounted to a total of 13.6 million euros, which have been invested since 2017. The financing consisted of funds from the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction, the Senate Departments for Urban Development, Building and Housing as well as for Education, Youth and Family, as well as the district's own funds. The measures carried out included an energy-related renovation of the facade, windows and roof, the renewal of the technical equipment and sanitary facilities. Parts of the building were restructured and barrier-free accessibility was ensured, including an elevator and barrier-free sanitary facilities.

In addition, a neighborhood teaching kitchen was set up in the family center and the entrance situation was redesigned. The aim of the renovation is to improve access to education and social participation for children, young people and families. The official invitation to the opening ceremony on September 20, 2025 has already been issued.

Importance for social participation

The reopening of the Haus der Jugend comes at a time when the issue of the “right to housing” is becoming increasingly important. Many people in Germany have difficulty finding suitable housing, particularly vulnerable groups such as the homeless, people with disabilities or those who have experienced racism. According to that Institute for Human Rights The lack of adequate housing is a serious problem that endangers not only health but also social participation.

The situation for homeless people became particularly dramatic during the Corona pandemic, as many of them are at higher risk. The need for policy measures that enable non-discriminatory access to housing is more urgent than ever. The House of Youth offers a multifunctional space that acts as a contact point for families and young people and contributes to improving their living conditions.

Overall, the renovation and reopening represents an important step towards promoting social cohesion and supporting disadvantaged groups. The city and district's commitment in this area signals that the needs of families and young people are being taken seriously and that a strategy is being pursued to sustainably improve their living situation.
