Tietzenweg cycle route: Finally safer for cyclists in Steglitz!

On October 15, 2025, comprehensive renovation work on the road surface will begin on Tietzenweg between Unter den Eichen and Gardeschützenweg. The work will take place under a full closure and will be carried out by the Roads and Parks Department. In collaboration with the Senate Transport Administration and infraVelo GmbH, the street will be converted into a bicycle street, which will take place after the work has been completed, which has been announced for October 31, 2025. These measures are part of a larger plan to improve safety and comfort in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf bicycle priority network.

City Councilor for Transport Aykal announced that a further section of the cycle route between Gardeschützenweg and Augustastrasse will follow in 2026. An examination of the applicability of the milling technology on the existing cobblestones is pending. The aim is to fully develop Tietzenweg into a cycle route in one to two years, which represents an important connection via Fabeckstrasse to the Free University and City West.

Establishment of the bicycle lane

After the renovation work, not only markings but also signage will be made for the new cycle route. Cyclists will have priority on this street in the future and will be allowed to ride next to each other. Trucks and cars are only allowed to use the road as residents, with a speed limit of 30 km/h. It is also important that garbage trucks, emergency services and the fire department have access at all times. The sidewalks are not affected by the construction work, except for minor repair work.

The creation of this cycle route is part of a larger project that provides more than 1.6 kilometers of new cycle routes in Steglitz-Zehlendorf. On the Königsweg, for example, a section of around 1.3 kilometers between Nikolassee and Zehlendorf is being rebuilt and converted into a bicycle route. The project also covers 350 meters of the northern Tietzenweg in Lichterfelde, which will also be designated as a bicycle street where only local traffic will be permitted.

Advantages of the new cycle streets

The new cycle streets offer numerous advantages for cyclists. According to the Bicycle Monitor 2023, 83% of cyclists perceive bicycle roads to be safe. The advantages such as wider lanes, the ability to drive side by side and speed limits are attractive to many users. These expert opinions and the expansion of the bicycle priority network are in line with the 2021 amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), which made it easier to create bicycle streets in Germany.

In Berlin, the total length of bicycle streets has now grown to 1,669 kilometers, which accounts for 0.2% of all public streets. This development shows the increasing awareness of safe and attractive cycling infrastructure in urban areas. Projects like that of the city of Steglitz-Zehlendorf show how targeted measures can promote cycling and increase safety for all road users.
