A shortage of skilled workers in the craft: Hanebutt GmbH wants to win young talents

The craft in Germany is on the abyss! Missing specialists and the oppressive flood of unoccupied training positions drive the industry into the crisis. In an alarming survey by Hanebutt GmbH, carried out by YouGov, the dramatic situation is mercilessly disclosed. The question remains: How can we inspire the youth for professions in the craft?

In 2023, the number of unoccupied apprenticeships reached a frightening maximum with 35 percent! The situation in East Germany is particularly alarming, where small businesses that are affected by a shortage of skilled workers even achieve a non -occupation rate of 43 percent! Above all, the construction industry as well as services such as the hairdressing trade.

acute danger for the future

The survey reveals that a quarter of a million skilled workers are currently missing in German craft! These terrifying numbers throw a bright light on the urgently required measures. The survey, which was carried out between 15 and 18 August 2024 and took part in the 1001 participants, also shows the growing disinterest of young people in professions in the craft. An unprecedented image problem threatens!

  • Shocking perception: 38 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds see handicrafts negative! Only 47 percent of the total population have a positive opinion about the craft.
  • scandalous education in schools: 72 percent of those surveyed feel poorly informed about career opportunities in the craft! This is urgently needed here!
  • urgent need for action: 83 percent require a comprehensive school information about craft professions in order to counter the shortage of skilled workers!
It is shocking that despite the high reputation of the craft professions, two thirds of the respondents denounce a lack of social appreciation. The younger generation in particular sees the professions negatively. But what do the parents think? Three quarters recommend their children a career in the craft - but these advice seem to be in vain!

What does young adults really get to? The salary is at the top of the career choice, but the survey shows that reputation and the opinion of friends are at least as important. Schools urgently need to be reformed here, because there is agreement that they should play a key role - 80 percent of the respondents demand more information!

a call for action

Henning Hanebutt, master roofer and managing director of Hanebutt GmbH, raises an alarm: " The results underline the acute need for action! This is the only way we can win young people for the attractive craft professions and stop the shortage of skilled workers!

The Central Association of German Crafts (ZDH) is also aware of the great challenge: " young people are open to many opportunities, but they also have to be informed!

Because Hanebutt GmbH has already taken the first steps-with teacher internships and social media activities on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram! " We want to reduce reservations and convey fun with the craft! " So Hanebutt.
