Danger of collapse in Berlin-Mitte: residential building on Reinhardtstrasse evacuated

Today, August 28, 2025, a residential and commercial building at Reinhardtstrasse 6 in Berlin-Mitte is the focus of attention because it is considered to be in acute danger of collapse. The fire department was alerted around 10 a.m. on Thursday morning and immediately began evacuating the five-story building. The reason for the emergency measure are visible changes to the static structure, which were particularly noted in the roof area, where the entire roof structure has shifted and parts of the facade are bulging outwards.

The evacuated residents, the exact number of which is currently unknown, are being cared for by a BVG bus. Thanks to the quick measures, no injuries have been reported so far. Residents report that the threat of collapse did not occur suddenly; Rather, there has been a curvature on the roof for some time, which has recently become more acute.

Measures by the fire department and the THW

The fire department immediately called in specialist advisors from the Technical Relief Agency (THW) to secure the building. The THW is bringing special technical equipment to support the structure and prevent further damage. A fire department drone is also in use to monitor the situation from the air. Reinhardtstrasse remains completely closed between the intersection of Friedrichstrasse and Albrechtstrasse, including for pedestrians.

The causes of the risk of collapse can be diverse and affect the supporting structures of a building, which include walls, ceilings, foundations and roofs. If the forces acting on these structures exceed the load-bearing capacity of the material, failure can occur. Structural statics, which deals with the stability of buildings, is crucial for safety in construction. Although visible signs such as cracks or deflections are often the first warning signs, a collapse can occur gradually and over a long period of time, giving those affected time to escape. Regular maintenance measures are therefore essential in order to identify potential dangers at an early stage.

The situation around the building on Reinhardtstrasse clearly shows how important it is to control the structural statics of the building. In the event of a collapse, not only residential buildings are affected, but bridges, tunnels and other infrastructural structures can also be at risk.
