Diet covers in the state parliament: MPs receive 500 euros more!

Berlin, Deutschland - The diets of the Brandenburg members of the state parliament are subject to a new regulation supported by a majority of the parliament. From January 1, 2026, an automatic increase will be set to a maximum of 3.5 percent, which will avoid excessive annual jumps in the MPs' compensation in the future. These adjustments are based on the general development of income and consumer prices that have been set annually since 2017. Thus, the references of the 88 MPs increase by over 500 euros per month this year, such as rbb24 reports.

The reform is an agreement between the coalition factions SPD and BSW and the CDU and should apply until the end of the 192029 election period. Critics, including the AfD and the left, reject the regulation. The AfD faction describes the automatic increase as problematic and calls for a public debate about any increase. The left-wing boss Walter described the regulation as "lifted" and "cynical". Overall, however, the automatic adjustment of the diets remains, but on the condition of the above -mentioned cap.

criticism of the increase

The increase in the diets is criticized by the BSW parliamentary group as "inappropriate". Part of the faction would have liked a lower cap. According to MAZ-Online the adaptation began in 2023 Have to increase 500 euros (5.7 percent), while no adjustments were made due to the Corona pandemic.

The basis for the annual adjustments forms a statistical index about the development of income in ten important industries, levied by the Office for Statistics Berlin-Brandenburg. The regulation that the increase is to be used to 3.5 percent was proposed by the BSW. However, it is clear that the last actual increase in the 2023 reimbursement was 500 euros and a need of almost 500,000 euros is expected for the 2026 budget.

additional regulations

MPs will also have to pay additional costs from their compensation in the future, while the rents of the constituency offices will only be reimbursed as net rent. The maximum reimbursement for these rental costs is increased by 200 euros. These new regulations are part of a more comprehensive approach for transparency and better use of public funds.

The diets of the MPs could continue to remain politically controversial, while the new regulation is likely to initiate changes to the preparation and adaptation of the diets further discussions in the state parliament. The automatism of the adaptation could possibly be extended or changed, but the exact procedure remains to be seen.
