The influence of flavors on the smoke stop: studies show great importance for e-cigarette users
The better taste of the e-cigarette compared to smoking is one of the most important arguments for adult smokers to switch to the less harmful e-cigarette. Fruit aromas are particularly popular, tobacco aromas play a subordinate role. This emerges from a survey by the industry association Alliance for Tobacco -Free Enjoyment (BFTG). Of the more than 800 traders surveyed, around 87 percent stated that they were mostly to sell fruit liquids such as strawberry, apple and mango. Only three percent of e-cigarette users use pure tobacco aromas.
Philip Drögemüller, managing director of the BFTG, emphasized that the majority of e-cigarette users become less relapsed if they use fruit aromas instead of tobacco aromas. Further results of the survey show that 95 percent of the respondents believe that flavors play a very important role for e-cigarette users. 84 percent believe that consumers would get the flavors in a ban on a ban on legal trade. 83 percent believe that a ban would give illegal trade.
A study was already carried out in 2016 on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Health, which provided similar results. Around 80 percent of the adults surveyed stated that they mainly use fruit liquids. The taste and smell was rated as crucial by 57 percent of the participants. The BFTG has also published a detailed fact paper on the importance of e-cigarette aromas.
A Canadian study published in the magazine "Addiction Behavior" shows the effects of aroma bans. Here, 82 percent of the surveyed are users against flavors. Every sixth would start smoking again. Less than a third of the respondents would be satisfied with the flavors that were still available. Almost as many would then get their flavors in a different way.
Philip Drögemüller warns of the consequences of an aromas ban and emphasizes that many of the smokers who were switched to e-cigarettes could return to the tobacco cigarette if the fruit aromas were forbidden. Customs in Germany also points out that an aroma ban would fuel illegal trade because consumers do not want to do without their products.
The importance of the flavors for the tobacco stop is a topic of great relevance and continuous discussions. The results of the survey and studies clearly show that flavors have a decisive influence on the choice of e-cigarette users and a ban could lead to negative effects on health policy.
