Reading from 'Everything is jazz' by Lili Grün: Stella Maria Adorf reads on March 19, 2024
The Viennese author Lili Grün, who was murdered by the Nazis in the Maly Trostinez annihilation camp in 1942, experiences a rediscovery from her book “Everything is Jazz” (original title: “Heart overboard”) on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, in the Heinrich Schulz library in Berlin. The review of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung describes the work as a charming mix of melancholy, cheek and wit, similar to works by Kurt Tucholsky and Mascha Kaléko. The novel tells of the turbulent life of young women in Berlin in the 1920s, sometimes autobiographically and with a lot of heart.
The novel plays in Berlin around 1930 and follows the history of the Viennese actress Elli, who tries to stay afloat with a new love and a cabaret collective called “Jazz” in a time of the economic crisis and poverty. The reading in the Heinrich Schulz library is presented together by the Musikschule City West and the library and accompanied musically by a band, consisting of Christof Griese (saxophone), Tal Balshai (piano), Horst Nonnenmacher (bass) and Leon Griese-Schoeneich (drums).
The event promises an interesting mix of literature and live music and offers the audience the opportunity to discover the work of a forgotten author. Entry is free, which makes reading accessible to a wider audience. It offers the opportunity to combine literary history with local culture and to enjoy an evening full of art and entertainment.
