Charlotte Pfeffer School: New sports area opens for students!
The District Councilor for Schools and Sports, Benjamin Fritz, today announced the successful completion of the Charlotte Pfeffer School in Berlin-Mitte. This specially designed educational facility represents a support campus that offers space for the intellectual and physical development of students. On September 25, 2025, component 4 of the school building, including the sports hall, was officially handed over to the school and sports office. The handover took place after the completion of extensive renovation work, which is seen as a further milestone in the modernization of the school. The school can now use the new sports hall, while club sports can start there from November 1, 2025.
Fritz was extremely pleased with this progress and also referred to the opening of the Paradiesgarten last year and the construction of a new multifunctional building (MEB) in the first half of 2025. The aim of all of these measures is to offer the students of the Charlotte Pfeffer School a place for exercise and sport in order to promote the integration and well-being of the students.
A recovery project with challenges
The modernization and expansion of the Charlotte Pfeffer School, which began in 2022, was not without challenges. The construction management faced several unexpected difficulties and had to make regular decisions to move the project forward. There were numerous disruptions and open construction sites, which significantly delayed progress. Nevertheless, it was achieved to create a place that offers both learning and therapy opportunities.
The support campus is designed individually and barrier-free, which is particularly important for the needs of all students. The accessibility requirements are closely based on the requirements of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN-BRK). This convention was ratified in 2009 and aims to promote the participation of all people in social life.
Inclusive education and barrier-free design
In Germany, appropriate educational offerings are a prerequisite for children with and without disabilities to learn together. Schools must be designed to be barrier-free, including outdoor areas, so that all students have equal access. These include, for example, wheelchair-friendly floor coverings and sufficiently large movement areas for wheelchair users.
The educational landscape is supported by a variety of guidelines and recommendations, including the Model School Construction Guideline, which provides clear guidelines for the barrier-free design of schools. These include, among others:
- Barrierefreie Sanitäranlagen in ausreichender Zahl
- Zugängliche Unterrichtsräume mit variablen Möbeln
- Beleuchtete und kontrastreiche Eingangsbereiche
In addition, security concepts must take into account the concerns of people with disabilities in order to ensure full participation. The Charlotte Pfeffer School is an important step in this direction to further advance inclusive education in Berlin.
