Berlin's gas lanterns: rays of hope in dark times despite conversion!
In Berlin, around 17,500 gas lanterns ensure that the streets remain lit even during power outages. These historic light sources are not only part of the cityscape, but also offer residents security and orientation on dark nights. A resident from Zehlendorf reported on the positive effect of the gas lantern in her neighborhood, which creates a feeling of coziness and security.
The gas lanterns have a special place in the capital. Almost half of all gas lanterns still in existence worldwide are in Berlin. This is remarkable, especially since the Berlin Senate decided in 2006 to change the gas lanterns for environmental and cost reasons. Nevertheless, a certain charm of these lights remains.
Retrofitting plan and energy costs
A massive retrofitting project is currently underway. By autumn 2025, 26,500 of the original 44,000 gas lanterns will have been converted to energy-efficient LED lights. This change leads to significant savings: the energy costs for LED bulbs are less than a tenth of the cost of operating gas lanterns.
The Gaslicht Kultur association is actively involved in the preservation and maintenance of gas lanterns. This initiative is of great importance despite the change towards more modern light sources, as the tradition of this lighting represents Berlin's identity.
The gas lanterns represent not only a nostalgic memory, but also a special challenge regarding the future of the city's infrastructure. The balance between tradition and modernity is a constant issue for the city administration, especially given the ever-increasing demands on energy efficiency.
