Berlin is going green: more and more organic food is conquering the capital!

Organic food is becoming increasingly popular in Berlin. Around 955 certified companies offer organic products in the capital, including 59 agricultural businesses that grow fruit, vegetables and other products in accordance with the EU organic regulation on a total of 410 hectares. This reports that Lageso.

The demand for organic food is also reflected in the 138 retailers who sell organic products. In addition, 18 approved control bodies are active to ensure that the legal requirements for organic products are met. Lageso monitors the activities of these control bodies in order to guarantee consumer trust in organic labeling.

Monitoring and responsibility

Since October 2023, restaurants and caterers that use organic ingredients must also be inspected and certified. This is a step to ensure the quality and origin of organically certified food in the catering sector as well. This year, 90 cases have already been processed in which companies illegally marketed organic products, often due to a lack of knowledge of the legal regulations.

“Monitoring is crucial for consumers’ trust in organic products,” emphasizes Alexander Straßmeir, President of Lageso. Lageso is actively involved in educating companies about consumer protection obligations and plans to present an information stand at Green Week in January 2026.

Legal framework for organic production

The basis for the production, processing and marketing of organic products is the EU organic regulation. This not only regulates production standards, but also includes control rules, legal acts on imports from third countries and specific regulations for organic farming. Among other things, 955 organic companies were registered in the control process in Berlin in 2024, with 163 controls being carried out.

The regulation represents an important framework for fair competition and transparency in organic farming. In addition to the production regulations, there are also guidelines for traceability tests and labeling requirements, which are intended to ensure high quality and safety of organic products.

The rise of organic food

Organic food is becoming increasingly important not only in Berlin, but throughout Europe. Loud European Parliament Consumers in the EU are showing a growing interest in products that are produced sustainably and using natural methods. Organic food is no longer a niche product, even if its share of total agricultural production in the EU is still relatively small.

The term “organic” describes a sustainable agricultural system that takes into account both environmental and animal welfare and covers all stages of the food supply chain: from raw material supply, processing and transport to retail services.
