Berlin sets signs against anti -Semitism: Lahav Shani invited!
The Israeli conductor Lahav Shani, currently music director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, is the focus of a heated debate about anti -Semitism in the art scene. His concert at the Flanders Festival in Ghent, Belgium, originally planned for September 18, was canceled what a wave of outrage triggered in Germany. Star pianist Igor Levit commented on the cancellation as a "disgusting anti-Semitism", an opinion that was supported by several political actors. Minister of Culture Wolfram Weimer described the decision as "shame for Europe", while Berlin's governing mayor Kai Wegner and the Bavarian Minister of Art Markus Blume described the situation as unbearable and scandalous.
The cancellation was justified that one could not take care of "the necessary clarity" about Shaani's attitude towards Israel. This reasoning has triggered considerable resentment and raises questions about the role of anti -Semitism in art. In Germany, the topic was increasingly discussed by the cancellation of the concert in Ghent, especially in the context of the debated anti -Semitism problem, which was already in focus at Documenta Fifteen in 2022.
A symbol against anti-Semitism
In order to send a strong counter-signal, Lahav Shani was invited at short notice by the Berlin Festival and the Berlin Philharmonic Foundation in collaboration with the Konzerthaus Berlin. His concert with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra will take place on Monday, September 15th at the Konzerthaus Berlin. The program includes Beethoven's Violin Concerto with renowned soloist Lisa Batiashvili as well as excerpts from Richard Wagner's "Tristan and Isolde". This concert is intended to illustrate the unifying power of art and to make a public commitment against discrimination and boycotts in the art and science world.
The revitalization of Shaani's appearance in Berlin is an attempt to tackle the negative mood regarding anti -Semitism in culture and at the same time to promote the discussion about the responsibility of cultural institutions. In this context, the cultural department of the Ministry of Science, Culture, Culture, Federal and European Affairs Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has already initiated important discussions on the better integration of Jewish perspectives into artistic projects, supported by institutions such as the documentation and information center of anti-Semitism Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (DIA MV).
These developments are warmly recorded in the art scene. The exchange of artists and institutions about the need to create an anti -Semitism -free space is considered essential to ensure cultural diversity and respect for all votes in society. RiaS Hessen's technical discussion shows that such discussions are necessary to make cultural promotion future -proof.
