Berlin-Mitte: Citizens shape the future – exhibition on city life!

In September and October 2025, an exciting exhibition under the motto “Life in Berlin-Mitte” will take place in front of the Tiergarten town hall. This initiative, which is organized by berlin.de, aims to document the diverse experiences of residents in the urban space and to provide impulses for sustainable urban development. District mayor Stefanie Remlinger emphasizes the importance of active participation by citizens, which began on September 15th with celebratory opening speeches, including by Carsten Spallek.

A central exhibition feature is the so-called “noise knit” scarf, which helps visitors to consciously perceive the noises in the urban space. In addition, a district map will be presented that includes personal favorite places and ideas for change developed in workshops. These elements are intended to make the surrounding experiences visible and encourage citizens to actively shape their own environment.

Participation in urban development

The exhibition is part of a broader commitment to citizen participation in Berlin. According to staedtebaufoerderung.info, the participation of the population plays a central role in sustainable urban development. Participatory processes such as citizen forums, workshops and round tables enable people to actively participate in shaping their living space.

An example of this active citizen participation is the Berlin Noise Action Plan 2024-2029, which was developed on the basis of previous citizen projects and for which the Senate Administration invites online participation. The main goal of the plan is to reduce harmful traffic noise and is based on three core themes: the creation of urban rest and relaxation areas, the T30 concept for night-time noise reduction and the fight against so-called “poser noise”. These measures are intended to contribute to better health protection for citizens and increase the quality of life in the city.

Information and engagement opportunities

There are other opportunities for anyone interested to get involved in the Mitte district. Citizens can contact various places to obtain information: The Office for Citizen Participation Mitte, the Voluntary Office Mitte and the Volunteer Agency Mitte are available. The introduction to the exhibition, which took place at 4:30 p.m., was another opportunity to find out about ways to get involved and to actively participate in the events.

This integrative approach to urban development, which not only takes into account the experiences and suggestions of citizens, but also provides concrete measures to improve the acoustic conditions in Berlin, shows how important participatory processes are. These developments are of great importance for the future shape of Berlin and contribute to making the city more livable.

Active participation is the key to positive change, and the exhibition in front of the Tiergarten town hall is a step in the right direction. Everyone involved and interested is recommended to get actively involved.

The contact points organized by the Mitte district office are available for further information. This gives hope that citizen engagement will remain an integral part of urban development in the future.
