Berlin Global Dialogue: Europe's new role in the global power game!

From October 23rd to 25th, Berlin will once again be the meeting point of the global political and economic elite when the Berlin Global Dialogue takes place. This event addresses the future of the global order and aims to bring voices from the Global South and Southeast Asia into greater focus. These include countries such as Saudi Arabia, the Gulf states, India, the Maghreb states, Nigeria and the ASEAN region.

Berlin is being upgraded as a place of multilateral exchange, especially after a phase in which the city and Europe as a whole were more reserved in terms of foreign policy. Lars-Hendrik Röller, the founder of the Berlin Global Dialogue, highlights the potential that lies for European foreign policy in the Global South and emphasizes the need for Europe to look beyond transatlantic relations.

Challenges for European foreign policy

The discussions during the Berlin Global Dialogue take place in parallel with an EU summit, which will address topics such as the Union's competitiveness and defense capacity. However, critical voices warn of Europe's dwindling relevance in global crises. The EU's ability to make decisions is seen as problematic, particularly because of the required unanimity principle in foreign policy. Immediate measures are required, such as a security roadmap and the realistic definition of climate targets.

The growing discontent in Germany, which could also endanger Europe's democratic stability, is another pressing issue. Röller emphasizes the importance of communication and citizen involvement in order to strengthen trust in democracy. In order to act effectively in the international space, Europe must become more pragmatic.

Multilateralism as a future strategy

In the current geopolitical situation, no country is able to tackle complex global challenges alone. According to the European Union Collective solutions are essential for peace and security, sustainable development and respect for human rights. Acute challenges, such as Russia's aggression against Ukraine or conflicts in the Middle East, highlight the need for effective multilateralism.

The reforms of international organizations are considered necessary to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The Berlin Global Dialogue shows how important it is to integrate new voices, especially from civil society and the Global South. In this context this will also be the case BGD Young Voices Fellowship emphasized that actively involves students in the discussions and promotes the consideration of gender issues.
