Berlin: Jusos leadership duo resigns - speculation about political ambitions

The Berlin leadership duo of the Jusos, Sinem Taşan-Funke and Peter Maass, has resigned. Your resignation will be effective on September 30th when the State Conference of the Jusos takes place. Taşan-Funke explained that it was time for change. It is speculated whether she may seek the state chair of the Berlin SPD, alongside the current state chairman Raed Saleh.

When asked whether she would run for the state chair, Taşan-Funke initially did not want to comment. In a tweet, however, she referred to private reasons for resignation. She explained that the Juso state presidency was exciting and enriching, but is also a major challenge. As people with professions apart from politics, she and Maaß regularly brought her personal limits. Therefore, a break is necessary and the Jusos would need new impulses.

Peter Maaß said that they couldn't win all fights, but it was important to lead them. He also referred to private reasons for resignation. Voluntary politics at this level demands many deprivations and has often brought it to its limits in recent months. Therefore, it is consistent to clear the way for fresh ideas and energy.

The Jusos are the SPD youth association and have spoken out against the coalition of the Berlin SPD with the CDU in recent years. They did not want a governing mayor of the CDU and criticized the then head of government and still SPD state chairman Franziska Giffey. You just failed in the membership decision on the coalition with the CDU.

In 2024, the Berlin SPD will choose a new state chair. It is unclear whether the previous state chairpersons can keep up. Franziska Giffey and Raed Saleh face new challenges.
