Construction work in Gesundbrunnen: S-Bahn traffic stopped at the weekend!

Next weekend, from October 17th to 20th, the Gesundbrunnen station in Berlin will be closed to S-Bahn traffic due to necessary switch replacements. This reports tagesschau.de. From today, October 16th, until shortly after the weekend, there are already restrictions on the north-south route that will last until October 24th.

The closure particularly affects the S1, S2 and S25, which will not run between Nordbahnhof and Bornholmer Straße. The ring railway S41 and S42 is also interrupted between Schönhauser Allee and Wedding. During this time, affected passengers can rely on a replacement service with barrier-free buses, which will be set up to make travel easier.

Comprehensive traffic control

From Friday, October 17th, 10 p.m., to Monday, October 20th, 1:30 a.m., the entire Gesundbrunnen area will not be accessible to S-Bahn traffic. A shuttle service between Nordbahnhof and Gesundbrunnen has also been set up for this period, although the transfer options in Humboldthain must be used. In addition, the U6 and U8 are recommended as bypass options, while the S1 only runs every ten minutes in the southern part between Zehlendorf and Anhalter Bahnhof.

The construction work is part of regular maintenance, as such switch replacements usually take place every 15 to 20 years in central Berlin junctions. Gesundbrunnen train station is an important transfer point for around 100,000 passengers every day. The S-Bahn Berlin provides information at sbahn.berlin about the exact construction status and the replacement traffic.

Price adjustments in the coming year

Another important aspect that affects passengers is the announced increase in prices for bus and train journeys in Berlin and Brandenburg. An average price increase of six percent will come into effect from January 2026, which could pose an additional challenge for commuters.

These construction measures and their effects on S-Bahn traffic are also covered by the offer vbb.de communicated where important construction work in regional transport and in the Berlin S-Bahn network can be viewed.

Construction site signs will also be placed at the relevant stations to provide detailed information and a construction video with further details on replacement traffic will be available from October 10th.
