Construction work on the Berlin Wall Trail: New section in Reinickendorf!
Construction work to renew the sixth section of the building will begin on October 20, 2025 Berlin Wall Trail on Ruppiner Chaussee in Reinickendorf. These measures are part of a comprehensive project to qualify the entire Wall Trail, which stretches over around 160 kilometers. The work is scheduled to be completed by spring 2026 and aims to significantly improve the walkability and navigability of the path.
The Berlin Wall Trail, which follows the former customs route along the inner-German border, functions not only as a historical remembrance trail, but also as a leisure route for citizens and tourists. The current section showed severe damage due to difficult ground conditions and an inconsistent substructure. To remedy this, a new surface made of recycled asphalt will be laid and newly modeled corridors for rainwater disposal will be created.
Scope of the renewal measures
The project includes, among other things, the installation of a new bench made of weatherproof oak and galvanized steel, as well as the installation of an information stele that provides historical images and multilingual information. The renovation aims to preserve the Berlin Wall Trail as a historical place of remembrance and at the same time strengthen the modern infrastructure for local recreation and sustainable mobility. Financing of 12.39 million euros is provided for this, with 90% secured by the Senate Department for Economic Affairs and 10% by the Senate Department for Mobility.
Overall, further construction work is currently underway in other areas of the Wall Trail, such as on Hahneberg in Spandau and between Japaneck and Lichterfelder Allee. This work is scheduled to be completed by summer 2026. Particular attention is paid to the sustainability of the materials used, which are specifically designed to be environmentally friendly through reuse and recycling.
An integral part of the city's history
The improvement of the Berlin Wall Trail represents a significant step towards securing a historic path system that connects central memorial sites such as Bernauer Strasse and Mauerpark with urban and landscape open spaces. With over 100 overview maps and 40 information stations along the route, the path is used not only as a space of remembrance, but also as an educational place and public route connection.
The project measures were defined based on an inventory from 2018 and initiated in 2019 by a resolution of the Berlin House of Representatives. The measures have been implemented gradually since 2022.
Users of the Wall Trail can experience the history of the division of Berlin in different ways, be it on foot, by bike or in guided educational offerings. The Berlin Wall Trail is not only an important monument to the past, but also an important infrastructure for developing the neighborhoods and connecting the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg.
