Anti-Semitic slogans in Friedrichshain: Police intervene!

There was an incident in Berlin-Friedrichshain yesterday evening that once again highlights the problem of anti-Semitic statements in the city. A 57-year-old man loudly shouted anti-Semitic and National Socialist slogans at the intersection of Revaler Strasse and Dirschauer Strasse. Police were alerted after a 46-year-old woman reported him for racist insults. When the emergency services arrived, the man was checked and a folding knife, which he was carrying under a scarf, was seized. However, after the police measures were completed, he was released on site. The State Police of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office has taken over the further investigation, as berlin.de reports.

This incident is part of a worrying trend in Berlin that has increased since Hamas' attack on Israel in October 2023. According to the Berlin public prosecutor's office, more than 160 investigations into anti-Semitic crimes in connection with the Middle East conflict have been initiated in recent months. These figures also include incidents at demonstrations in which anti-Semitic slogans were often shouted and property damage was committed, such as this one Tagesspiegel reported.

Increase in anti-Semitic incidents

The increase in anti-Semitic statements in Berlin is alarming. The “Berlin Register” documented a peak of 7,720 discriminatory and right-wing extremist incidents in 2024. The number of anti-Semitic incidents has almost doubled to 2,200, compared to 1,113 in the previous year. This development is influenced not only by the increase in incidents during demonstrations, but also by a general normalization of racist ideas in society, as expert Jana Adam notes. Racist incidents have also increased compared to 2023, highlighting worrying trends in the capital, highlights the Tagesspiegel.

A total of 165 cases related to anti-Semitic crimes have been documented as of January 2024, often linked to demonstrations and pro-Palestinian rallies. Many of these incidents are characterized by insults, incitement to hatred and acts of resistance against the police. This highlights the scale of the challenges authorities face in combating these problems.

The ongoing clashes and incidents are not only a sign of social tensions, but also show that the authorities are required to respond appropriately. The State Police and the Public Prosecutor's Office are faced with the challenge of monitoring and punishing these problematic developments.
