Biodiversity action day: Berlin's nature can be experienced by young and old!

On October 29, 2025, an action day for Biological Diversity Day took place in Berlin-Mitte, which was supported by the district councilor for order, environment and transport, Julia Schrod-Thiel (CDU). The event, which took place in front of the Museum of Natural History, brought together numerous participants, including employees of the Environment and Nature Conservation Office as well as students from a primary school in Tegel. Schrod-Thiel expressly thanked the district coordination office for nature and environmental education, which organized informative stands on insects, birds, mammals and urban trees. The main aim of this initiative was to make the diversity of Berlin's flora and fauna tangible for both children and adults.

During the day of action, Schrod-Thiel and a number of prominent guests, including State Secretary for Climate Protection and the Environment Britta Behrendt and the museum's general director, Professor Johannes Vogel, found out about the museum's various environmental education projects. These projects are designed to convey the importance of biodiverse urban nature and to promote the protection of biological diversity in Berlin. The day of action was part of the “Understanding Diversity” project, which aims to make biodiversity recognizable in public spaces and to convey urban nature in a playful way.

Insights into local nature conservation work

The Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin, which was founded in 1981, plays a central role in promoting nature conservation, environmental education and voluntary services. It is active in all eleven Berlin districts with urban nature ranger teams that protect ecologically valuable areas. Initiatives such as the “Plant of the Month” or moorland restoration complement their tasks. The foundation also offers workshops, seminars in the educational forum and the “Nemo – Nature Experience Mobile” program for primary schools to raise awareness of nature.

An important concern of the foundation is the networking of actors in nature and environmental protection. Various initiatives are communicated and supported, particularly through the environmental calendar and the Long Day of City Nature. The foundation also organizes Green Social Days to promote voluntary commitment.

Promoting biodiversity in cities

The challenges facing urban areas in terms of biodiversity are also the subject of discussions within the policy initiatives. According to a press release from the BfN on October 24, 2023, a total of 472,000 euros were made available to develop and implement municipal biodiversity strategies in cities such as Neuburg am Inn, Darmstadt and Remscheid. These strategies aim to create species-rich habitats and improve urban nature.

In Neuburg am Inn, for example, the “Nature at home!” project is underway. funded, which includes nesting aids and planting packages, while measures to create new small bodies of water and combat invasive species are planned in Remscheid. In Darmstadt, however, the focus is on citizen science approaches to recovering biological diversity. Municipalities have until February 1, 2024 to submit project outlines for biodiversity strategies.

These diverse activities and initiatives demonstrate how important it is to preserve biological diversity in urban areas and how each individual can help protect and promote nature in our cities.
