Future of emergency accommodation in Tegel: Does everything stay the same?

The emergency accommodation in Tegel remains, despite a decline in immigration. Mark Seibert, President of the State Office for Refugee Matters (LAF), emphasized that the facility is expected to be needed by at least 2026. The accommodation is currently equipped with 6600 seats, 4637 of which are occupied. Another 1000 places are to be added this year, which is intended to increase the total capacity to around 7,600. This decision was made in order to react as best as possible to the continued need, while at the same time the living conditions of the residents are to be improved, such as Tagesspiegel.de reported.

improvement of the living situation

The LAF President expressed the desire to close the accommodation in Tegel, but there are currently no alternative accommodation options. The intended improvement of the accommodation quality includes, among other things, reducing the occupancy density in the new halls. Currently, up to 14 people live in a so -called "honeycomb", whereby only 8 to 10 people per unit are to be accommodated in the new halls. This measure should offer residents more privacy that is urgently needed, since the conditions in Germany have already been criticized several times, such as bz-berlin.de reported.

In total, more than 18,000 refugees have been registered in Berlin by October, a decline compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, around 9,000 people remain in the emergency accommodation in Tegel, while another 32,000 live in regular accommodations. Seibert warned of a possible "accommodation deficit" if the creation of new accommodations in Berlin is not driven quickly. The demands on the districts to create new accommodations remain valid to ensure adequate care for the refugees.
