Forest dying in the Volkspark: Trees have to give way for path renovation!
On October 10, 2025, the Pankow Roads and Green Spaces Authority published important information about the upcoming renovation of the asphalt paths in the Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg. These measures are financed by funds from the assets of the parties and mass organizations of the former GDR (PMO). The rehabilitation of the path is a significant project designed to improve the usability and safety of the park for visitors.
The office began preparatory tree work as early as February 2025. These were carried out outside the protection period according to Section 39 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act. During the preparatory work it was determined that several trees in the park pose a danger. In July 2025, a recommendation was made to fell 12 severely damaged trees. These trees, which mostly include poplars, locust trees, pines and larches, have a high proportion of dead wood and numerous crown breaks.
Necessary fellings
The felling of the trees is planned for the 31st and 32nd calendar week, directly before the renovation work begins. This is crucial because the affected trees are not only in direct contact with the paths to be renovated, but have also already caused damage to the asphalt surface. Regeneration of these trees is not possible, which further emphasizes the need for their felling.
The office's experts have emphasized that there are no alternatives to felling to ensure safety and park use. The felling of trees and the subsequent renovation of the paths are part of the comprehensive measures aimed at sustainably improving the infrastructure and natural conditions of the Prenzlauer Berg People's Park. According to Berlin.de, an important step is being taken that meets both ecological and safety requirements.
