Uni in Berlin-Dahlem blocks container village solution
The property on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, which is currently being used as a parking lot, is to be used by the Senate in the near future for the construction of a container village to accommodate 260 refugees. However, these plans encounter resistance, especially at the Free University. The university management was surprised by the project and emphasized that they needed the area for their own construction projects. As an alternative, the university proposed to use empty buildings of the Federal Real Estate Agency at the Thielallee 92 location, which have already been used as refugee accommodation in the past.
The Senate's refugee representative, Broemme, emphasized that the accommodation of refugees on the brown -wing property of the university was a temporary solution until the construction of the planned building began. He emphasized the need to use free areas to accommodate refugees. At the end of March, the Senate had decided 16 other locations for container villages to counter the lack of living space for refugees.
Nevertheless, there are resistance to the establishment of refugee accommodation in some districts, especially in the previous areas. On social media, the Free University is criticized for its negative attitude, otherwise it will be perceived as cosmopolitan and tolerant. Some users argue that the university should provide their space for refugee accommodation instead of locking themselves against their use. The debate raises questions about the political orientation and support of refugees through educational institutions.
