Magnus Hirschfeld Day: Berlin sets signs for LGBTQIA* Rights
The district office Treptow-Köpenick sets a sign of solidarity and acceptance on the occasion of the Magnus Hirschfeld day by having the rainbow flag. Magnus Hirschfeld, a German doctor and sex researcher, was a pioneer in the LGBTQIA* movement and tirelessly campaigned for the rights of homosexuals and trans* people. His Institute of Sexual Science carried out pioneering sexual operations that represented a milestone in the history of trans* people's rights. Unfortunately, Hirschfeld's work was brutally interrupted during the time of the National Socialists when his institute was destroyed.
The Magnus Hirschfeld day was launched on the Initiative of the Berlin Senate to raise awareness of sexual and gender diversity and to honor the legacy of Magnus Hirschfeld. May 14th, Hirschfeld's birthday, offers an excellent opportunity to appreciate his achievements and courage.
The district office Treptow-Köpenick invites all citizens to take part in the diverse campaigns that take place throughout the city as part of the Magnus Hirschfeld. From cultural events to educational opportunities to discussion rounds, this day offers a platform to raise awareness of sexual and gender diversity and honor the legacy of Magnus Hirschfeld. In addition, the rainbow flag in front of the Treptow town hall will also blow on May 17, the international day against homo-, bi-, inter- and transthobia (Idahobit). This day stands for the fight against discrimination and the acceptance of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.
The district office Treptow-Köpenick confirms its commitment to an inclusive society in which everyone can live freely and without fear of discrimination.
