Tragic tram accident in Prenzlauer Berg: pedestrian seriously injured
On October 19, 2023, there was a tragic traffic accident in Prenzlauer Berg when a 78-year-old pedestrian was hit by an M1 tram. The 37-year-old tram driver was steering his vehicle towards Am Kupfergraben street around 6:10 p.m. when the woman was standing on the median near the tram tracks in the stop area of the Schönhauser Allee S-Bahn and U-Bahn station. She was hit in the arm, fell and got between the curb and the tracks, whereupon she was dragged along. She suffered serious internal injuries and had to be immediately taken to a hospital for intensive medical treatment. A specialist commissioner from Police Directorate 1 (North) has started investigating the accident in order to clarify the exact circumstances, as berlin.de reports.
Just a few hours earlier, another serious accident occurred on Greifswalder Straße, in which a 50-year-old pedestrian was hit by an M4 tram at around 4:15 p.m. when he entered the road at a red light. The man suffered serious head injuries and died at the scene of the accident. The 52-year-old driver of the tram suffered shock and required outpatient care. Due to the accident, Greifswalder Strasse between Danziger Strasse and Hanns-Eisler-Strasse was closed in both directions until around 8:30 p.m. A specialist commissioner for traffic offenses has also started the investigation here, as bild.de reports.
Determination of causes of accidents
These two incidents are part of a broader picture painted by the region's monthly road traffic accident statistics. According to statistics-berlin-brandenburg.de, these statistics not only record accidents, but also provide detailed information about those involved and vehicles as well as about accident victims and the causes of accidents. The results of the statistics provide a basis for measures in the areas of legislation, traffic education, road construction and vehicle technology.
The comprehensive survey is carried out as a full survey with the police departments obliged to provide information and only includes accidents that occurred on public streets, paths and squares. However, traffic accidents that only result in property damage or minor injuries are only partially recorded.
