Telekom dominates mobile network for football European Championship: Record values and top countries in roaming
Strong preliminary round in the Telekom mobile network at the football European Championship
During the preliminary round of the European Football Championship, Telekom's mobile network was strongly challenged. On June 19, around 10.2 million gigabytes were recorded the highest data traffic in the entire Telekom mobile network. The games in Scotland-Switzerland, Germany-Hungary and Croatia-Albania provided around 5 million gigabytes nationwide data and thus for the highest operation in the preliminary round.
The game Türkiye against Portugal in the Dortmund stadium brought first place in the individual ranking of the games. More than 5,000 gigabytes were broadcast in the stadium, compared to around 3,000 gigabytes in a normal Bundesliga game.
The most successful game in Germany was the Match Germany-Hungary on June 19. A new record was set up when the data throughput reached in a second 1713 gigabits per second. The Telekom network transported a total of 3.152 million gigabytes of data on this matchday between 4 and 9 p.m., which is 30 percent more than on a normal evening in Germany at the same time.
In the ten stadiums of the European Championship, the use of the data during the 36 games of the preliminary round. The fans used a total of over 100,000 gigabytes of data. The Dortmund stadium led the preliminary round ranking of the stadiums, followed by Munich and Berlin.
The data use was also high in the fanzones. In the preliminary round, 226,000 gigabytes were transported through the network. The Fanzone at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin had the highest data use and was in front of Frankfurt and Cologne.
The most used app of the preliminary round was Instagram, followed by Facebook and WhatsApp. Foreign fans also used Telekom's network intensively during the preliminary round. Most roamers in the stadiums came from the Netherlands, followed by Switzerland and Austria. A similar picture was shown in the Fanzons, where the Netherlands also took the top position, followed by Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
Telekom has expanded its mobile network in all ten stadiums of the European Championship. A total of around 750 new 5G antennas were installed, 300 of which provide the stands and about 450 the indoor areas. The data throughput rate in the stadiums is now three times as high as before, and the fans can determine a significant improvement when surfing or sending messages.
Telekom has also optimized the network for fans around the stadiums. 38 temporary care was used to provide an optimal mobile phone connection. The fan mile in Berlin at the Reichstag and the Fanzons and Public Viewings in Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne and Stuttgart received special care.
